Another Fab Four Retirement
Kane Williamson Unexpectedly Retires Mid-Series
Related to my recent article on the Fab Four, this week it was announced that Kane Williamson had retired from all forms of international cricket. A surprising mid-series retirement for statistically the greatest ever New Zealand test batsman. Williamson played his last test against England at Lords on a very challenging pitch.
Kane Williamson finished his test career with 9,515 career runs at an average of 54.1. He made 33 test centuries and 38 fifties. He also scored almost 10,000 runs in white ball cricket with a further 15 centuries and 65 fifties.
With the earlier test retirement of Virat Kohli, this leaves only Steve Smith and Joe Root as the last two test playing members of the Fab Four. Root has almost 14,000 test runs at an average of 50.7 and Smith has almost 11,000 test runs at an average of 56.1. Root is quickly closing on Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time test runs record.
